Well, after yesterday's post, I got an email from a fellow bloggy friend. She said, "Hey, what's up with your blog? It used to be funny and really good reading, and lately it's been all about God and the Bible. I'm personally not against God, but I'm not religious. I hope you don't lose readers because you're becoming religious!"
That is, she meant to say, "...because you're becoming a Jesus Freak!" That's I think what was really going through her head.
I have another friend that I talk to now and then who I swear is expecting one of these days for me to start preaching and quoting the Bible to her. It's kind of funny... the conversation will start off normally enough, but then she'll say (in that weird tone of voice), "Sooooooo... uh, anything new lately? How have you been?"
Truthfully, it doesn't matter to be if readers move away from my blog. As each week goes on, I get that feeling that this is what I'm supposed to be doing. Not that I'm going to completely give up funny stories about my past or writing about my favorite organics. But you know that cliched question that we all ask, "What is my purpose in life?" I honestly think that my purpose is to write about God. And my thoughts on readership are these: 1) It's like the news... if it doesn't appeal to you, turn it off! 2) I love, love, love, love, love my new-found faith. I want to help our new church-funded orphanage in Zambia. I want to join small groups to learn more. I want to work with different ministries. But because of my job, my time for those things are limited. This is one way I can help spread the word about God. 3) Even if I touch ONE person's life, then this will all have been worth it.
"But what happened to you?" You might ask. "How did you get to this point? What made you decide that Jesus Christ is the way to salvation?" Those are all very good questions -- and I have a couple of simple answers.
The first part of my answer comes from very common sense. I have to give the credit for this example to Bob Dutko (click on his name, and then look for it again on the menu to the left on the WMUZ website). Bob is a radio host with his own show on Detroit Christian Radio WMUZ The Light. His show is the most popular Christian Radio show in all of Michigan and Ohio, and every day from 12-4 he debates with those who call in and oppose the Christian faith. He defends our faith with pristine examples of hard-core science and fights to uphold the principals, values and teachings of Christianity.
On one of his recent shows, Bob was debating with an educated, degreed scientist about evolution versus creation. This scientist insisted that humanity was formed from cells that had developed and evolved throughout time over billions of years. To be truthful, for many years of my life I had agreed with this way of thinking. It made perfect sense to me that lightning or some other type of electric pulse generated activity and action within cells, which over time morphed into greater form. Bob listened to this man speak and then said his piece. I am paraphrasing here, but the synopsis of his retort is this:
Imagine you are an explorer. You are with your group, walking on lands that had never been explored by your society. Suddenly, you stumble upon the Egyptian pyramids. Or the Sphinx. Pretending that you are the first ones to have ever seen it, let's assume that you have no knowledge whatsoever of the Egyptians or any other people of that area. Now, having just seen those magnificent structures, what makes the most sense in trying to determine where they originated: 1) that they had spontaneously morphed and formed over millions of years by the wind, the sun and the sand until they became these fantastic, intricate structures? or 2) that someone had purposely created them? Wouldn't you think it would be silly to assume that they just magically appeared and formed out of the Earth? And those are simply inanimate buildings composed of rock and sand! Yet atheists are willing to believe that something as complex and mysterious and magnificent as a human being was coincidentally formed as a result of the right mix of cells and water and electricity. They think we "evolved" the same way one might assume those pyramids "evolved" out of the wind and sand. Guess what? They didn't. Egyptians actually and purposely made them. So then, doesn't make the utmost sense that someone (God) actually and purposely made us???
I, for one, was blown away by that example. I had already converted and whole-heartedly believed in Christ by the time I heard that analogy, but it still resonated with me long after that radio show aired. Think about how complex our brains are. How symbiotic our bodily systems are. How something so intricate like an eyeball or our sense of taste is. How magically our bodies regenerate and heal. How we're able to have a conscience, and think for ourselves. We embody free will, and that's certainly not something that can "coincidentally" occur with the right mix of carbon, electricity and water.
I used to date a guy who was (and still is, I'm assuming) pure atheist through-and-through. He scoffed at any mention of God or Christ or the Bible. Now, looking back, I realized that he was the perfect epitome of an atheist. At that time, he had no friends, no love (other than me), no faith, no desire to help others, no cause to be unselfish. Everything was for his power, his gain, his recognition, his glory. I didn't want to be like that. I didn't want to be WITH someone who was like that. And now I say to anyone still reading this entry -- if you consider yourself to indifferent or opposed to the concept of God, trust me when I say it brings a whole new light to your life. It really makes it all worth living for. You WILL be transformed.
The second part of my answer to why I became a die-hard Christian was something Randy said to me very casually in conversation one day. Forgive me if I posted about this in the past, but it was so profound that it hit me like a ton of bricks. He said to me, "Yeah... it will really suck not having you in Heaven. You're such a great person. It's too bad you won't get to experience that."
My first and immediate reaction was a defensive one. "Excuse me?" I asked. "What makes you think I can't or won't get into Heaven? You don't know that."
Randy shrugged at me nonchalantly and said, "I love you, hon. But you won't. The only way to Heaven is to accept Jesus Christ as your savior, and have your own relationship with him. Sorry if you don't believe that. But that's just the way it is."
So I began to argue with him. I argued that it's impossible to think that all of the Muslims out there - the fastest growing religion in the world today -- would not get into Heaven. That all of those Zen Buddhists who reached enlightenment didn't really connect with God and really wouldn't get into Heaven. How could that make sense?
That's when Randy explained to me that the sacred scriptures of the Bible still live on as our Guide Book -- a God Book that is designed to put us on the right path. Missionaries help to educate those in countries where Christianity is not prevalent. Humans have their own free will, and have the ability to choose in life. You can choose to believe, or not choose to believe.
I surfed the web and did a little investigating. If emotional affairs and online sex fall into the category of cheating along with physical relationships, then between 55-65% of U.S. adults will cheat on their partner at some point in their lives.
That's obviously a majority. But just because the majority does it, does that make it right?
About 33% or 2 billion people on this Earth are Christians. I consider myself to be intelligent, educated and curious. I also consider myself to be Christian. If the majority of the people believe that Christ is NOT the answer and Christianity is NOT the right religion (or only way to eternal life), right now that means squat to me. As the above statistic of cheaters shows, it doesn't matter what the masses think.
What matters is what I think. What matters is what's in the Bible. Believe it if you like. Continue reading if you care to. Bookmark me if you're interested in more. Email me if you want to chat with me on the side. But if none of those options appeal to you and you don't agree with me -- and refuse to keep an open mind -- then move on. There are plenty of other blogs out there in the world.
On the other hand, if you currently are not a Christian and have the tiniest little seed of doubt about your current beliefs, stick around or say hi. Trust me, it will be worth it.

Atheists are afraid, afraid to believe, afraid to love. They are selfish, self-centered, and seek power and control. They do not feel love. They are lost. You cannot drag them along, but you can continue to show them the map.
Maria, the argument for Creationism opposing evolution is a false dichotomy. Why can't you have a God who created the world to work using evolution? Why does it have to be either God or evolution? The fact is that evolution is an excellent and well established scientific theory that is used in medicine and pharmacology all over the world.
On another note the zoomorphic figure of the Sphinx may well have originated as a large rock whose features were later carved on.
I'd also like to correct your assumption of "the perfect epitome of an atheist" if I may. Atheism is simple a lack of belief in god or gods. You can no more define a person by the things that they do not believe in than you can define a cat as a creature that cannot fly. The fact that he was unhelpful and unloving is a shame but it isn't indicative of atheism.
I know lots of Christians and lots of atheists and agnostics. Honestly the differences in their morals are minimal. If anything my experience is that Christians are more judgmental than other faith and than people with no faith.
55-65% of US adults are unfaithful. Wow, 80% of US adults are Christian too.
When you were discussing heaven and hell (a concept formalized in the New Testament) did you mention that a god who consigned people to eternal torment despite their living good and charitable lives was not only unfair but also unloving?
Maria,
Great post! Sorry you're losing readers because of your faith...and turning into a "Jesus Freak". :) Just think of how many readers you'll gain by being a Jesus Freak.
I, for one, like both parts of your blog. Your "old" parts...and definitely your "new" parts of the blog.
Keep it up! I was a Christian before...but you're definitely teaching me things I didn't know before!
Believe me when I say Thanks!
Julie
Beautiful, beautiful post. Keep them coming!
A learning Christian.
You go, Girl! I love your steadfast spirit!
You keep your freak on. I am loving watching your faith evolve. : ) (Pun intended.)
I have always said that I envy new Christians. As one who has been fairly well acquainted with God her whole life, I think I lack something that you have. I know that there is something I have that you don't and the grass is always greener and all that, but still. I love hearing the excitement just bubbling up.
You keep up the good work and God will continue to bless you. I know you are blessing us!
I just discovered your blog yesterday and I have been looking through it this morning and I love it. This is a great post and I love the points that you brought forth. I don't know how long you have been a Christian, but you have a talent with writing to people who are both "old Christians" and new believers.
From one Jesus freak to another, keep it up and God Bless!

Welcome Readers!
The early parts of my blog are just an average, 30-something girl's thoughts, opinions and dreams. I wrote about my new hubby, about my home, about friends and family, about love and the ups/downs of life. I wrote poetry, reviewed movies and discovered new restaurants.
But then something changed -- I became a Christian. It's funny how it happened so quickly and so drastically. One month I was an atheist (and before that I was a Muslim), debating with my husband on how science made sense over God. The next month I was on my knees in prayer, asking God for forgiveness and accepting the grace of salvation of Jesus Christ. It was very humbling...
Right now, I am here to show the world that salvation exists in one form and one form only -- Believing in Christ. If you died tomorrow... or if the world ended next week... what is waiting for you upon your death? Are you holding a one-way ticket to the Kingdom of Heaven? If you don't believe that Christ saved you from sin, then you don't have that ticket.
If that's the case, stick around. Hopefully we'll still have enough time to change your destination...
